He graduated from Yewon School, Seoul Arts High School, and the College of Music of Seoul National University, completed the Konzertexamen program at the Lübeck University of Music in Germany, and later earned his doctoral degree from the State University of New York in the United States.

Sungwon Yun was admitted with first place and graduated from both Yewon School and Seoul Arts High School, and was later admitted with first place to the College of Music of Seoul National University. During his studies, he continued his education in Germany, later completing the Konzertexamen program at the Lübeck University of Music. As a full scholarship recipient, he then earned his doctoral degree from the State University of New York in the United States.

He received First Prize in the Ewha-Kyonghyang Music Competition, the Hankook Ilbo Music Competition, and the JoongAng Ilbo Music Competition.

He is currently Professor at Konkuk University.
